Aylward Academy, London – Overcoming Challenges

24.06.2019

Aylward Academy is not only responsible for the education of more than 1,400 pupils aged 11-19, it’s also an important hub for those living in and around Enfield.

It’s a place where diverse groups of people meet, discuss, play and learn; a real focal point for the community.

Overcoming Challenges

Aylward Academy has hired its facilities for many years – opening the doors for the benefit of the community, while generating a crucial additional revenue stream for the school.

Enfield Council supported the school in the hire of its facilities, handling administration, management and financial aspects. However, it wasn’t to last and, when Enfield Council were unable to continue supporting Aylward with managing the hire of its facilities, the Academy was faced with a difficult situation. The school simply didn’t have the manpower or time to manage it themselves, but closing the doors would leave a hole in the budget.

How could Aylward Academy continue to hire its facilities to the local community and protect a vital revenue stream?

Its partnership with School Lettings Solutions (SLS) was the answer, with the contract beginning on 1 September 2014.

SLS took ownership of the entire process, allowing the school to focus on what it does best. The partnership has protected funds, while ensuring that fantastic school facilities remain accessible to the community.

The Outcome

SLS has eliminated the hassle of not only managing the hiring of facilities, but also marketing the facilities within the local area and supporting groups using the space with bringing new participants on board.

Aylward Academy now hosts a jam-packed events calendar.

SLS’ dedicated regional manager ensures that facilities are maximised Monday to Sunday, year-round, dealing with any issues that should arise and ensuring facilities are clean, tidy and safe prior to the return of students the following morning.

From dance classes in the school’s purpose-built drama studio, faith groups using the lecture theatre, Tottenham Hotspur Ladies Football Club training on its astro turf pitch and a Bulgarian Language School using classrooms, Aylward Academy continues to function as a meeting point for the community, while generating additional funds to allow the school to continue providing the essential support functions its students need.

It’s a successful partnership that serves both the school and the community.

Elena Moriatou, Director of Support Services at Aylward Academy, said: “SLS takes complete ownership of the hire of facilities, handling everything from administration through to billing, while providing the staff on-site, 7-days a week. It’s important that we have a partner we can trust to make sure that everything continues to run smoothly. It’s a hassle-free arrangement and I’d be happy to recommend SLS to other schools looking to maximise the use of their facilities.”
